Tips & How to Buy

You’re here because you’ve purchased, or planned to purchase, a Red Lion Big Cat Mixer from Lynx mixers. As you have probably found through research, this mixer has a worm drive gear that wears out fairly regularly. Most often, this is due to the lack of maintenance and up-keep on the Big Cat concrete mixer. Because the unit is being used in harsh conditions – outside on construction sites, in the back of your truck, etc. – it collects dust and dirt on the worm drive gear which dries out the oil lubricant on the gear and creates resistance when the drum rotates. To help curb this problem, we have come up with a few pointers:

  • Keep the worm drive gear for your Big Cat mixer lubricated. The great part about the design of this concrete mixer is the accessibility to all the working parts. All you need to do is occasionally check the gear to see if it is well lubricated and if not, simply apply a small amount of a household cooking oil – vegetable oil, for instance – to the gear and replace the fluid in the oil cup before every use. Other industrial lubricants will work well too, just be careful not to use too much so you aren’t leaving residue and/or fluid at your job site.
  • Do not over-work your Big Cat mixer. Because of this concrete mixer’s low price and industrial design, many DIYers and contractors alike tend to over do it when it comes to loading the mixer with materials. Although the machine’s specs state the capacity as 3 square feet, a more realistic estimate of capacity is about 1.5 square feet of materials. In other words, a full 80 lb. bag of concrete mix is pushing it – keep the drum running between 1/2 and 3/4 of a bag at a time to be safe!
  • Keep the unit clean. As with any tool, it’s important to keep up on simple maintenance and cleaning to allow for the longest possible product life. The Red Lion Big Cat mixer is no different. You’ll need to keep the drum clean to ensure the motor doesn’t become overworked and keep the external components clean to ensure the drive shaft and worm drive gear are moving without resistance when the machine is on. If storing the unit outside, it is a good idea to cover it with a tarp or vinyl cover to protect it from the weather.

Hopefully this short list of pointers will help you keep your Red Lion Big Cat Mixer for years to come.
